"Artists often have a favorite subject. Peter Paul Rubens favored large-bodied women, while Claude Monet loved his gardens. Likewise, Drew Strouble has a thing for
felines and has made it his business to portray every prowl andprance made by his models ..." Allison Fisher, "Painters on the Prowl", Purina Special Issue, PetLife,2000
Meet Drew Strouble, America's Premier Cat Artist. CatmanDrew!
"I'm seeking to capture the true spirit of the cat."
Drew Strouble (rhymes with 'noble') has been delighting the eye of appreciative fine art lovers for over 30 years. He is internationally recognized for his exquisite execution of
detail and masterful command of medium. His collection of cat artwork and realistic watercolors of the domestic cat is the largest in the world by a single artist. Drew's superb technique, as well as
his sensitivity, makes the complex look easy in evocatively emotional masterpieces. He is America's best-loved, premier cat painter.
Drew earned his BFA from Ringling School of Art & Design where he later served as instructor. His work has been in the Boca Museum of Art,the Jacksonville Art Museum, the New England Institute
of Fine Arts, etc. His paintings and lithographs are in numerous private and corporate collections.
The Painter of Cats is also owned by Cats. CatmanDrew and his wife actress Kim Crow share their Florida home with 4 very demanding felines.
Artist's Statement
I am the sole creator of each the original watercolor paintings on display.
The watercolor paintings are done with Winsor & Newton tube watercolors on Arches cold pressed 100% cotton watercolor paper. Using a photographic reference as a starting point, I normally create
a working drawing in pencil for size, composition, and adjust lighting to improve the final painted image. I also use many other techniques to apply the watercolor to achieve the desired
effects and capture various surface textures, as well as the illusion of light, and shadow.
Asa master offset lithographer for many years, I produce my own reproductions of my original work to the highest archival standards of excellence and have since inception. This rare combination of
artistry and technical mastery as an artist/lithographer guarantees that your purchase will be a lasting investment for generations to come.
Since 1990, my dedication to painting cats has been a been a very fulfilling and rewarding journey. So many people have told me that my work captures the essence of the animal. I
think I've just touched the tip of the iceberg, celebrating the cat as it really is -- a very worthy subject for Fine Art. It is an honor to paint cats.
In addition to being a Fine Artist, Drew was a
Master Photo-Lithographer for over 14 years.
This extremely rare combination of artistry and technical mastery results in Drew being able to reproduce his original works to the highest standard of excellence and guarantees your print purchase
to be a lasting investment for generations to come.
What is an Original?
An 'original' refers to a one-of-a-kind creation. Whether it be a watercolor, oil painting, ink and/or wash drawing, etc. This is the actual 'original' artwork created by the artist's own hand.
What is an Offset Lithographic Reproduction?
An Offset Lithographic Reproduction is created by a photo mechanical process sometimes referred to as 4-color separation. The original work of art is color separated on a high-end scanner to produce
4 negative halftone films used to create the 4 printing plates. These plates transfer ink to a rubber blanket on the printing press.
The archival inks Drew uses in printing are formulated for art reproduction and resist fading from exposure to ultraviolet light.
For proper care of any reproduction, keep them away from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or fluorescent lighting. Normal incandescent lighting or full spectrum lighting is best.
What is a Giclée Reproduction?
Giclée means 'spray of ink' in French. Drew produces all of his own Giclée reproductions using a state of the art printer designed specifically for Fine Art Reproduction. By using 6 color Museum Archival Ink technology,
the look and feel of the original art is beautifully captured. These inks and paper are rated light fast for 200+ years.
What is an Artist's Proof? What is a Limited Edition?
An Artist's Proof is a small percentage of the printed Limited Edition. For example, a total run of a Limited Edition could be 1000 prints. 950 of these prints make up the Limited Edition. The
remaining 50 prints would be the Artist's Proofs. Each of Drew's Limited Edition prints and Artist's Proofs are produced with fade-resistant Museum Archival inks on acid-free pH. balanced papers. He
personally inspects, hand-signs and numbers each print. The corresponding Certificate of Authenticity is also hand signed, numbered, dated and embossed by the artist. There is no difference in size
or color between the Artist's Proof and the Limited Edition prints. They are produced during the same print run.
Serious collectors generally prefer Artist's Proofs over Limited Editions because they are very limited in number and increase in value faster when they are sold out.
What is an Open Edition?
Open Edition prints are reproductions of an original that can be of any quantity. Drew's Open Editions are generally smaller than the original artwork. They are hand signed and titled by the artist
and printed with fade-resistant Museum Archival inks on acid-free pH.balanced papers.
